I recently joined a Certified Organic company to promote their fantastic line of wholefood nutrition and essential oils. It wasn’t a surprise because the writing was on the wall at my previous wellness company, but that’s another story for another time.
Anyway, a Google search for a UK organic company yielded a plethora of results. I did my due diligence on them all, knowing enough about the industry’s deception and some of its darker marketing practices. What I uncovered about some owners did not come as a total surprise; my suspicions were just validated.
You see, anyone can assert organic status since it lacks regulation, unlike the food or health supplements industry.
In fact, many companies include the word organic in their company name or product branding and falsely claim, or imply, that their ingredients are organic.
Even a popular UK organic company has products in their certified organic range that are not certified, people naturally assume that all the products in the range carry organic certification.
The unsuspecting public doesn’t know what they don’t know.
Most people assume that when a health & wellness company calls itself organic it will have organic products. Sadly, that isn’t always the case.
It’s why I was keen to find an ethical organic company that manufactures in accordance with the operational procedures and practices as outlined and certified, by the Organic Food Federation.
What Does Certified Organic Mean?
Being ‘Certified Organic’ entails independent inspections and ongoing audits of company facilities, ingredients, formulas, and packaging to uphold the accreditation.
It also means a company has to adhere to very strict standards, with an auditing process that is there to protect the customer. It’s an ironclad guarantee that what the customer buys is absolutely 100% organic.
In addition, independent inspections and audits are mandatory for organic farms and ingredient suppliers to attain organic certification.
GMOs are banned, as are pesticides, herbicides, and numerous additives.
Organic standards do not allow for the use of glyphosate at any stage of production.
The high standard follows through to include eco-friendly packaging and processes.
So, Buyer Beware!
If a company claims to be organic without ‘certified organic’ status or lacks the Organic Food Federation logo on its label, what you purchase may not be entirely 100% organic.
