Today I listened to an interview with Mike Dillard, author of Magnetic Sponsoring. Many topics were discussed on how to make 6 figures. And that eventually lead me to ask these two questions.
1. What skill have you mastered?
2. Is your upline setting you up for unrealistic expectations?
So hang with me for the next 10 minutes, and you’ll come away having learned about two reasons why some people make 6 & 7-figures while others struggle to make money no matter what company they are in.

Transcript begins after my introduction ends...
But basically, all I’m doing is being a tour guide in showing people how you can flip lead generation process on its head so that you become the hunted instead of having to be the needy networker chasing down prospects who frequently turn out to be, either dead broke, negative nellies, or have an employee mindset and not an entrepreneur mindset and prepared to put in the time and effort that it takes to succeed.
[coughing fit… brb]
Okay, so let:s crack on with today’s video.
Now, this morning while working through my inbox and the mechanics of responding to people like I do every morning. My DMO, my Daily Method of Operation. I listened to an interview with Mike Dillard, who is the author of Magnetic Sponsoring and the newly revised edition. Which I believe ships out on 1st November.
Mike was telling his story of the process and struggles that led him to write Magnetic Sponsoring and the massive success that it became over a 15 year period. I actually have my copy here.
As you can see this the original, spiral bound. I’ve ordered myself the latest copy which will be in the post. I got the digital copy and also the audio copy.
But while he was telling his story of the process and struggles that lead to him writing Magnetic Sponsoring, a couple of the topics they talked about immediately got all my attention.
The first one as I already said:
What Skill Have You Mastered?
In essence, Mike talked of how many network marketers jump from one company to another hoping the grass will be greener at their new ground floor shiny object.
They attend all their company events and see people getting up on stage and talk about all the tons of money they have made. Yet, they themselves continue to struggle in company after company. I’m sure you know people like that.
The simple truth is, there is one overlooked key difference between those who continue to struggle and those having massive success.
They have all mastered a particular skill.
Whether that skill is in closing leads on the phone, doing home parties, working business events, cold calling other networker ads, reaching out to the cold market on social media, or even doing sampling, or whatever method is being taught by upline or even the company.
The fact is, they have become a master at one particular technique.
Now here’s where the challenge and also the frustration of Network Marketing comes in.
In this industry, you are always being told that duplication is everything.
Duplicate what your upline does. How many times have you been told that?
But what if what works well for your upline isn’t a natural fit for you?
You may be wired differently and feel uncomfortable cold calling 100 people a day or doing other activities that don’t align with your personality type. You might be an introvert and what upline teaches is best suited to an extrovert personality.
So you end up not enjoying what you do. Which is not exactly a good recipe for success or even lasting success!
Now, there’s nothing wrong with what your upline does. If it is working and making them a ton of money, then absolutely fantastic!
But the reason you might be struggling is because it’s not aligned with how you like to work.
You have to build your business in a way that naturally aligns with your own personality type.
You need to ask yourself, what skills will you need to learn to pull it off? To make that shift and take some ownership for who you are and how you are wired? How well you know yourself… and of course, how do you want to build the business so that it’s more fun and more congruent with your personality type?
Mike went on to talk about the half-truths of network marketing, which I can certainly say many people might find a little controversial. But it is very hard to get the truth out of people in this industry. Have you noticed that already?
So I have my second question for you:
Is Your Upline Setting You Up For Unrealistic Expectations?
When you joined your opportunity you were probably told all you have to do is to “Just get your two” …or three, …or whatever the number is, and then help them to do the same to begin the duplication process.
Your upline will usually have some kind of simple 1,2,3 step system for you to plug into to get your enthusiasm fired up. But it doesn’t take long before you begin to realize that protocol might not be the smartest path to riches.
It’s really doing you a disservice to be selling you on a dream and a process that’s not necessarily true.
Heck, I struggled going down that path myse lf so I know what it means. At the time, I was in that category of people who didn’t know what they needed to know. How wonderful hindsight!!
The truth is… and this is Mike’s opinion as well as my own opinion …network marketing is not duplicatable.
People who have achieved 6 and 7-figures, incomes that is, are leaders who have all mastered and perfected certain skill sets. And that’s why they are getting paid accordingly.
It’s not realistic for those actions to be duplicatable.
Well, certainly not in the short term because not everyone is capable of being a leader, or is prepared to put in years of time and hard effort that it takes to learn the required skills.
What’s more, many of the top leaders often have ancillary retail steam outside of their network marketing opportunity which generates revenue… and an endless supply of fresh leads for their own business.
It might be a book, training website, training program or course, or maybe a weekend training workshop.
Yet, this is an important piece of the success puzzle they never pass on to their new recruits. More on that in just a second…
The realities being, if they told you, you being the new recruit, that what it really takes to make 6 or 7 figures then they’d probably never join.
The bottom line being, if you want to succeed you need to invest your time and money in furthering your education and leadership skills.
Once you have developed yourself to become a master of a particular skill, you will have established yourself in a position of leadership and then you will begin to see the massive desired results.
Now getting back to that last unfinished point about the missing piece of the puzzle because it’s VERY important.
Now what all those 6 and 7 figure leaders have in common is that they have an external revenue stream outside of their primary network marketing opportunity.
You see, it’s very difficult to do a paid ad campaigns just from the sales and revenue earned from your compensation plan or just retailing your company’s products.
You have to have other ways to support and generate additional revenue in addition to your primary network marketing opportunity.
And most importantly, you have to have ways to monetize all those leads and prospects that you do generate who say NO.
Which on average 95%-97% of those who actually took look at your business will end up saying no. Maybe they are already involved in another company or whatever it might be. But that doesn’t mean you cannot turn them into a customer for one of your products. For example like a copy of Marketing Sponsoring.

Now here’s the really neat thing, if they are building another network marketing business they still need some kind of expertise and training.
And if you have digital products to sell that helps them solve those pains and problems then there is a very good chance they will buy those products even if they don’t join your primary business.
And if you are paying for advertising and marketing, well, it becomes critical that you don’t leave any possible revenue on the table.
So hopefully, you found some value in what I have just shared with those two questions and some of the reasoning behind them.
Maybe it has now put your expectations in check on what really goes on behind the scenes with big income earners.
At the end of the day, there is no right way or wrong way to go about building your business, but there is a better way if you are open to it.
So that’s it for this video. I’ll leave you with one final thought.
Whatever marketing strategy you choose, always do what you enjoy and then success will follow.
