Fight Hay Fever Naturally: Try My Antihistamine Watermelon Cranberry Superfoods Smoothie

F

If you have hay fever or allergies, you know how my body reacts when pollen season arrives: it goes into allergy overdrive as well. Suddenly, my eyes become itchy, my nose begins to run like a tap and I have the sensation that a fur ball is stuck in my throat. Don’t even get me started on the sneezing fits that occur whenever I venture outside!

I was tired of relying on over-the-counter remedies and prescription medications and was determined to find a more natural way to address the underlying cause. That’s when a friend recommended I try Superfoods Plus to help with my seasonal allergies. They’d had good results, so I figured, “Why not give it a shot?” And I’m so glad I did!

My Natural Antihistamine and Histamine Liberator Smoothie

Drinking the same healthy drink every day can become monotonous for your taste buds. So I recently began experimenting with making smoothies with healthy natural ingredients that have many health benefits as well as immunotherapy, antihistamine, and histamine properties.

It wasn’t a precise recipe because this was the first time I made my antihistamine and histamine liberator smoothie, and I didn’t take notes on the exact measures used.

But it was made with 2 cups of semi-frozen watermelon, a cup of frozen cranberries, 1 tablespoon of lime juice, a small amount of grated frozen ginger, a dollop of runny honey, 1 scoop of Superfoods Plus, and a cup of coconut milk.

Smoothie Ingredients and Health Benefits

Watermelon:

  • Rich in vitamin C, which acts as a natural antihistamine and helps reduce allergy symptoms.
  • Contains lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that can help alleviate inflammation associated with allergies.
  • Hydrating properties help maintain respiratory health and soothe irritated nasal passages.

Cranberries:

  • Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, which can help boost the immune system and reduce allergic reactions.
  • Contains quercetin, a natural antihistamine that helps control histamine release and minimize allergy symptoms.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties may help alleviate sinus congestion and discomfort.

Lime:

  • High in vitamin C, which supports immune function and reduces the severity of allergic reactions.
  • Contains flavonoids that act as natural antihistamines and can provide relief from hay fever symptoms.
  • The alkalizing effect helps balance pH levels in the body, reducing the likelihood of allergic reactions.

Ginger:

  • Possesses anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce nasal congestion and relieve allergy symptoms.
  • Contains compounds like gingerols and shogaols, which may inhibit the production of histamines and alleviate allergic reactions.
  • Helps boost the immune system, promoting a better defence against allergens.

Honey:

  • Local raw honey can act as a natural immunotherapy by exposing the body to small amounts of pollen, reducing sensitivity over time.
  • Contains enzymes and antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and soothe irritated airways.
  • Antibacterial properties may provide additional respiratory support and alleviate allergy-related respiratory infections.

Coconut Milk:

Anti-inflammatory properties:

Coconut milk contains lauric acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the respiratory system caused by allergens, including hay fever triggers.

Rich in vitamins and minerals:

Coconut milk is a good source of essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, magnesium, and potassium. These nutrients support a healthy immune system, which can better defend against allergens and reduce hay fever symptoms.

Hydration and soothing properties:

Staying hydrated is crucial during allergy season, as it helps thin mucus and soothes irritated nasal passages. Coconut milk is a hydrating beverage that can relieve dryness and discomfort associated with hay fever.

Dairy-free alternative:

For individuals with dairy allergies or lactose intolerance, coconut milk serves as a suitable dairy-free alternative. It allows them to enjoy creamy and nourishing beverages without triggering allergic reactions.

Potential antioxidant benefits:

Coconut milk contains antioxidants, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, which can help combat oxidative stress caused by allergens. By neutralizing free radicals, these antioxidants may alleviate allergy symptoms and provide overall relief.

I posted a long article covering all the amazing features and health benefits of the all-in-in, Superfoods Plus, which you can read here. So, I won’t go into details about that addition to my natural antihistamine smoothie, except to highlight the importance of having the right balance of gut flora that supports your immune system and helps protect you from allergens, as well as the role of Lactobacillus acidophilus in reducing allergic reactions to pollen:

Balanced Gut Flora and Immune System Support:

  • A healthy balance of gut flora helps regulate the immune system, preventing excessive immune responses to allergens.
  • Proper gut flora promotes a stronger immune system, enhancing the body’s ability to defend against allergens and reduce allergy symptoms.
  • Maintaining a diverse and thriving gut microbiome supports overall immune health, reducing the risk of allergic reactions.

Protection from Allergens:

  • Healthy gut flora helps strengthen the gut barrier, preventing the entry of allergens into the bloodstream.
  • A robust gut microbiome enhances the production of immune cells that target and neutralize allergens, reducing the likelihood of allergic reactions.

Role of Lactobacillus acidophilus:

  • Research has shown that Lactobacillus acidophilus, a beneficial bacteria strain, can help reduce allergic reactions to pollen.
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus produces substances that regulate the immune response, reducing the release of histamines and mitigating allergy symptoms.
  • By modulating the immune system, Lactobacillus acidophilus can help alleviate the severity of allergic reactions and improve overall tolerance to allergens.
