The sun’s out, and thoughts flowing! ☀️ As I sit in the garden this afternoon, sipping my iced superfoods, I can’t help but ponder the hidden truths behind our everyday choices. Take soya, for example. It’s in so many products, yet how often do we question its origins?
Turns out, a staggering amount of soya grown worldwide is genetically modified (GMO). The numbers are eye-opening: 94% in the USA and 82% globally! Sadly, this often comes at the expense of precious forests, particularly in Brazil, where soya farming is a major driver of deforestation. Heartbreakingly, in 2022 alone, 9,494 km² of forests were wiped out in Brazil, largely to make way for more soya farming.
Why is this happening? Well, it all began in 1996 with Monsanto’s introduction of Roundup Ready soybeans. Now it’s a complex issue with many factors, including Monsanto’s patented genes, huge profits, and the power dynamics in the agricultural industry. But one thing’s for sure: it’s not doing our planet any favours.
It’s deeply concerning that some health product companies falsely promote soya as environmentally friendly when, in fact, the opposite is true. Soya farming has become one of the most destructive agricultural practices on the planet. This loss of biodiversity is not just a statistic; it’s a profound tragedy that affects our planet and all its inhabitants.
That’s why I’ve consciously chosen to avoid soy and other GMOs in my health supplements. It’s crucial to read labels carefully and understand what you’re putting into your body. Remember, your choices impact not only your health but also the health of our planet.
In the example below, you might be surprised at what you discover when you compare the ingredients of popular health supplements like certified organic and non-organic.
