Search Google with the term ‘detoxes’ and you’ll be presented with thousands of results from companies, each claiming their amazing detoxification product will cleanse your body of toxins and quickly shed pounds.

Then, when you visit their Facebook groups to read customer comments or ask about possible detox side effects, you are told that you may get a flatter tummy and can expect to go to the toilet more frequently. Or you may get an upset stomach, skin outbreaks, experience a headache or fatigue.

Then they go on to say…

But don’t worry if you do, it just shows that the detox is really working, flushing out those toxins through the skin, or making you rush to the toilet.

Unfortunately, thousands of people believe what these health companies and reps say without ever questioning it. After all, those negative things are VERY strongly sold as being really GREAT benefits. 

A closer inspection of their product ingredients might reveal that it contains a herb that’s a potent laxative. Many companies will focus their marketing on the amazing health benefits of a particular herb but fail to mention that it can also cause diarrhoea and dehydration. 

In fact, many detox products on the market cause dehydration, which of course can lead to an electrolyte imbalance. More about that later. 

Sad to say, false marketing and misleading expectations are not limited to just one or two companies, it is fairly common within the industry.

So, the next time you see one of those social media posts making promises you’ll ‘lose 5 pounds in 5 days’ with their detox product, you might want to look closer at its ingredients.

You want to do step one and step two at the same time. Reduce the things that are detrimental to your health and interfere with the detox process, while at the same time improve and eat a more healthy diet.

Reduce Exposure To Toxins

Start with small steps.

If you eat a significant amount of highly processed or refined foods from supermarkets, try taking small steps toward eating less processed foods. 

Supermarket foods have all been processed in some way to turn them into ready meals or packaged foods. During the manufacturing process, much of their nutrient value and fibre content is depleted.

Reduce white refined foods.

Refined foods boost your blood sugar, zap nutrition in your body, and cause inflammation. Inflammation is one of the key things that interferes with your detox process. Inflammation is one of the key things that causes heart disease and cancer.

So, you want to choose whole grains versions of foods over processed grain versions. Go with brown rice in place of white rice, whole-wheat pasta instead of ‘white’ pasta and whole-grain bread instead of ‘white’ bread.

Buy foods that have less sugar in them because sugar causes inflammation. Natural sugars occurring in whole food are better than added refined sugar because the natural fibres slow the release down and give it to your body at the level it needs.

Deep-fried foods, hydrogenated fats, sodas

Reduce or cut out deep-fried foods.

Avoid hydrogenated fats. 

Cut out sugary beverages like Coke-Cola, Red Bull and other sugary sodas.

Avoid as many products as possible that contain pesticides. While many dangerous pesticides are banned from being sprayed on crops in the UK, they still are in countries we import from. Soft fruits are worst for pesticides. If possible, always buy organic.

Eat more vegetables

Eat more fresh vegetables, organic if you can.

Try making your own meals because they will not be highly processed or have additives, synthetic ingredients, or preservatives like what gets added to processed and packaged foods.
